Orangeries FAQ’s

What’s the difference between orangeries and conservatories?

An orangery or orangeries were first created as an additional room which was specifically designed to let in plenty of light for growing orange trees and other fruit alike. The idea behind an orangery is to have the comfort of a traditional room whilst letting in daylight from a glass ceiling and glass panels within the walls.

A conservatory is similar in many ways however conservatories tend to not make use of brick walls in the same way and are generally glass with metal or plastic struts which hold the glass in place. Below you can see the difference between an orangery and a conservatory for yourself:

Glass roof with large glass doors but with brick walls

Small wall but mainly glass build with plastic struts.

How is an orangery constructed?

Orangeries are made up of supporting brick or stone walls that are placed alongside glass walls. The Brick or stone walls provide structural support for the roof which is designed in a traditional style that was highly popular when orangeries first came about.

The roof of orangeries are usually made up of a middle glass section which can be flat or angled like a traditional roof. Surrounding the glass area you typically see a flat surrounding roof area that leads onto the supporting walls. In the same way as a roofline the edge of the orangery roof commonly feature decorative fascias.

What roof options are there with orangeries?

When choosing they style of roof for your orangery you should consider what the style of the rest of the house or building. This doesn’t mean to say that you have to opt for an in keeping roof but it sometimes looks better if you do. The options are as follows:

Lantern Glass Roof

This type of roof is angled upwards to maximise light that enters the orangery and looks as follows

Flat Glass Roof

This type of roof is angled only very slightly to allow rain to run off however it has the appearance that it is flat from below.
